How to Hear God's Voice

What if God wasn’t hiding Himself?

What if He’s been with you this whole time, trying to convince you His ways are best?

In this blogpost, I’m going to show you how He is right here, right now.

Does God still speak?

A forest fire.
God was not in the fire.

In 1 Kings 19:9-18, God speaks to Elijah in a still small voice. Not in a great, powerful wind, nor in a large earthquake, nor in catastrophic fires, but in a still small voice.

Many people call that still small voice our conscience or even the little angel on our shoulder. But what if it was the Lord?

God wrote the Law on our hearts (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8-10), so whenever we commit a sin without Jesus as our advocate, our heart condemns us. But with Jesus (1 John 3:19-20), our heart does not have the final say.

Hearing God’s Voice

All you have to do to hear God, our Father, is to ask Him to speak to you.

James tells us that so much chaos occurs between humans because we do not ask God our heart’s desires (James 4:1-3).

More than that…what if God has always been speaking to you? What if your “conscience” or “the little angel on your shoulder” was actually God almighty this whole time?

We can confuse our actual conscience with the Holy Spirit. They can feel similar, especially if you’re new to the concept of hearing from God.

We can sear our conscience by giving into evil too many times, which is when God may give someone over to their own desires (Romans 1:18-32).

However, God tells us He wants a personal relationship with us plenty of times. What if He reaches out to all of us often?

The problem is the other voices

Inside your head, God speaks. However, that is also where your sinful flesh stays. Not only that, but you also have your own thoughts.

This is the conundrum: how do you distinguish your voice from God’s voice, God’s voice from the sinful flesh, and your voice from the sinful flesh?

How to know you’re hearing God’s voice?

An open Bible in a pulpit.
A Bible opened is a Bible used.

The clearest and most reliable way to know it’s God is to personally read the scriptures.

By reading both the Old and New Testaments, you will learn about humanity and all of its flaws.

This will give you insight into your own heart, mind, and soul.

It will also show you who God is and things that He would say if He were to speak to you.

Conclusion

How do you hear God’s voice?

He’s already speaking to you!

The problem is distinguishing His voice from your flesh and your own thoughts.

The only way to know the difference between the three “persons” is to read scripture. It’s purposed to divide soul from spirit and judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).

God is speaking.

Will you listen?
